GOAL Post 2009-8

Legislative Update from Olympia 6 March 2009

SENATE BILLS 5193 AND 5739 PASS SENATE

HOUSE BILLS 1052 AND 1498 PASS HOUSE

CHAMBER CUT-OFF THURSDAY, 12 MARCH

BILL STATUS TRACKING REDUCED

Senate Bills 5193 (alien firearms access) and 5739 (military CPL
renewal) have passed out of the Senate and were sent to the House
Judiciary Committee for consideration in that chamber. SB 5193 had 45
"aye" votes, three votes in opposition (Fairley (D-32), Regala (D-27)
and Tom (D-48) -- all anti-gun Senators), and one absent/excused. SB
5739 was unanimous, with 47 "aye" votes and two absent/excused.

House Bills 1052 (alien firearms licensing) and 1498 (involuntary
commitment) have passed out of the House and were sent to the Senate
Judiciary Committee for consideration in that chamber. Both passed with
unanimous votes, no opposition in the House.

The next major cut-off date is 12 March. By the end of that day, all
bills must have cleared their original chamber. Four of the five bills
we are tracking have already cleared that hurdle and await the whole
process again (committee hearings, committee and floor votes) on the
other side.

In the "Bill Status" section I have deleted the bills that died
procedurally for failure to pass the policy committee cut-off. The
possibility that any of them could be revived is remote.
